At the southern tip of the South Island of New Zealand, there is this seemingly unremarkable formation of rocks pointing south to Antartica. What you don't see or can't tell from this picture is that the rocks are actually HUGE-- each one of these are about 100 meters high-- and quite remarkable when you're there in the midst of it! 7 June 2002.

Things got a little out of hand at the Thanksgiving dinner table (who knew they made ReddiWhip in chocolate?). 25 November 2006.

These were pretty happy looking chickens that we saw yesterday in the Amish country of northern Indiana. Perhaps it was because they knew that they weren't likely to be eaten for dinner today? Near Middlebury, Indiana. 22 November 2006.

When our friends Pamela and David were here in October we had a nice walk at the Kalamazoo Nature Center. these are some of the fungi we happened upon. 3 October 2006.

I'm attending a meeting in Chicago today with the Presiding Bishop, so it seemed like a good time for another photo from her Investiture at Washington Cathedral. Today she told the assembled members of the church's committees, comissions, agencies and boards to get to work. "Do it faithfully. Do it with energy. Do it with passion. You can help us change the world." 4 November 2006.

...Gosh, if all the Episcopal elite look small in comparison to the Washington Cathedral, look how small the politicians look in this other photo I took from the airplane window leaving Washington after the Investiture. 4 November 2006.

...And even Washington Cathedral looks small from the air. Guess it's all a matter of perspective, eh? 4 November 2006.

Even the most powerful members of the Episcopal Church look very small in relation to the enormity of Washington Cathedral. 4 November 2006.

I have to admit to very mixed feelings about the American flag-- everything from "it was very important to my father and therefore it's important to me" to "I'm embarrassed to be associated with it when it's on weapons and when it gets turned into an idol." Having said that, the light at the Washington Monument was spectacular as the sun was setting and moon was rising over the Capitol late this afternoon. Washington, DC. 2 November 2006.

There's a pond around the corner from the cathedral, and today the resident swans looked beautiful in the late afternoon light. 1 November 2006.

Traveling across Canada on the Canadian was a wonderful experience, even when seeing mile after mile of this! Manitoba. 17 October 2006.

There's a hawthorne tree by our door that looks quite beautiful at this time of year (and also when the snow stacks up on the berries), but otherwise those darn (smashed) berries get tracked everywhere! 25 October 2006.

It snowed a few days ago, and the next day the snow melted off the trees. The dripping sound was quite loud! You can see the water droplets forming at the end of each branch. 24 October 2006.

I've been experimenting a bit shooting RAW images-- this was one of the first. I was struck by the way the sunlight was hitting the bare branches of this tree, while simultaneously adding an orange glow to the trees that had yet to lose their leaves. Taken at the Cathedral of Christ the King, Kalamazoo. 24 October 2006.

We dedicated our new peace pole last Sunday, but it was too rainy to get a good picture of it. In English, Hebrew, Arabic and Xhosa it says, "May peace prevail on earth." 28 September 2006.

Saturday, September 30, 2006

A little miracle out in the labyrinth yesterday-- these easter lillies were planted in the late spring (why, after easter, of course!) and I'm told usually take a year before they bloom again. But out there, in the midst of all the dying-off cycle off Fall, there's this wonderful reminder of new life. 29 September 2006.

Thursday, September 28, 2006

Today was a lovely early fall day. It was supposed to rain, but instead we mostly had bright sunshine and big, puffy white clouds. I wandered out to the reconciliation labyrinth at the Cathedral, and got to watch nature at work. Moments before this photo was taken this spider had successfully snared a grasshopper twice it's size. (As with all the photos, you can click on it to enlarge it; you can see the hairs on the spider's legs!) 28 September 2006.
